I think its a matter of whether people put the subject matter into context. Lots of people just absorbed the anti-semitic stereotypes that Borat portrayed and learned little else besides new insults to call their Jewish friends. It was about testing the boundaries, not just of those in the film and exposing a perspective into the world of others but also of society at large. How does society react 2 anti-Semitism & how tolerant are we of others different than us. I think you miss the point Thom.
surely some will just walk out of Bruno w/ more negative stereotypes portrayed by the character Bruno of homosexuals. That does not mean it was the point of the movie rather than 2 expose & take a snapshot of our society. I’m less concerned about the actor playing a role in a movie than the real people who have problems with him &2 me r the real culprits of promoting the real stereotypes which surely exist in our society.
As a progressive Jewish American I was not thrilled by Borat either.
When people came up to me quoting the things Borat said like “don’t take my money Jew” in humor. I was concerned and not particularily amused but too put it into context. However I was not silent about my concerns, that some would miss the underlying plot and walk away with just what we need more dirty names and generalizations about Jews.
My friends often responded that Cohen is himself Jewish, so obv. its cool(to an extent) right? What if Mel Gibson made Borat? hmm. Who knows the response.
Well is he homosexual? He certainly has no problem w/ other men naked on top of him, kissing men on the mouth. If Sasha Baron Cohen is a homosexual…would that change things?
I do think as a liberal and Democratic Jewish American that there is indeed comical value to an Austrian tormenting Ron Paul in any fashion. Those fringe right wingers & their econ. fallacies of hate & propaganda are the true source of concern in our society.
Long time listener and we’ve spoken on many issues. Shalom
ps. I certainly am no baron of truth and all knowing. These are just some thoughts I have on this subject as again a long time listener, and thanks to people like Thom a student of psychology and political science. So thanks for the discussion, and for helping me shut down right wingers in class daily. Your Jewish apprentice.
